I walked into my cube this morning and my flat shelf rack was back in its place. All of the folders that had been taken off, were neatly returned, but there was something strange about the way the rack looked. It seemed to be darker and duller than the other two racks. I took a closer look and found that the rubber feet were missing and when I dragged my fingers across the bottom, I picked up some chunks of burnt stuff. It smelled like meat. In fact, the whole rack smelled like meat. Did someone cook something on it?
I needed my morning coffee, so I went to the cafe for some of their sludge. Chad and Jerry from Building Maintenance were there. They looked at me funny and whispered something about putting something back. Were they talking about my rack? Were they the culprits? I went back to my cube and started working. I needed to escape the paranoia that was flooding my mind.
About an hour later, Jerry walked by my cube and asked me for directions to our new mailstop. I asked him why he was using our mailstop, instead of the Building Maintenance mailstop and he froze. A half a minute later, he mumbled nervously that he needed to fix something. Yeah, right, whatever. I pointed him in the general direction and gave him the post numbers, but he wanted me to show him the way. That was weird, considering he's in Building Maintenance and he should be able to find anything, given the post numbers. I led him to our mailstop, but halfway there, my paranoia returned. I glanced back towards my cube and sure enough, there was someone there. I ran back and found Chad kneeling by my desk. He was placing the rubber feet on my rack.
Ah hah! Caught in the act!
I asked them why they did it and they told me that it was unintentional. Their barbecue rack broke and they used my shelf rack as a last minute replacement. Sheesh! Why didn't they just go to Home Depot?
I gave them a stern look and shook my head in disgust. They could tell that I was really pissed off, so they didn't argue when I told them that they had to order me a new rack. It was either that or I'd have to go to their boss and they really didn't want me to do that.
