There's a car alarm going off in the distance and the dogs across the street are barking. I just showered and dried myself, but it's too warm to wear anything, so I'm sitting here naked in front of the box fan.

It's always the same during the summer months. I get hot flashes. I've had them ever since I can remember. They used to scare me when I was young. I thought I would burst into flames. Spontaneous combustion. I had seen it on a news program and I thought it to be true. I didn't want that to happen to me, so I always cooled off in front of the box fan after I showered. Then I'd wear my thinnest clothes and go to the fridge for a swig of the ice bottle.

We always had an ice bottle in the fridge. Mom did that especially for me, so I could cool down in a hurry. She would freeze a bottle of water almost all the way through and then place it in the fridge. Whenever I felt hot, I would take a swig and it would cool me down. It was a popular item. We had the normal bottle of water, but everyone preferred the ice bottle because it was much colder.

I'm drinking from an ice bottle right now. It doesn’t provide the overall cooling effect that it did when I was younger, but any little bit helps.
